Peanut Butter Jelly Time
Although we may all remember the combination of these amazing ingredients as though they were simply made for each other, there was a time when this delectable combination was definitely not the staple it has become today. In fact, this sweet recipe was virtually unheard of.
The first known peanut butter and jelly sandwich recipe appeared in 1901 in a publication of the Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science and was written by Julia Davis Chandler. At this point, the recipe was considered a new concept which would soon start a revolution.
Some years later, during the Great Depression, peanut butter would grow to become a key ingredient in the meals of many American families. Oddly enough, it was a low cost but very tasty and nutritional food. As sliced bread and “Grapelade” or grape jelly, became more common, so did the rise of popularity in combining these 3 ingredients. Due to the shelf life and portability of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the iconic trio became a key part of the United States military food rations during WWII. This would cause the peanut butter and jelly trend to explode. As soldiers came home from war, so did this amazing recipe. As military families grew, so did the appetite for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. At this point, the sweet treat was well on its way to becoming the traditional snack we know and love today.
Although we may think of the PB&J as just a childhood favorite or a feel good snack, the powers of this combination have extended well beyond our modern life. The fun fact is now known that the PB&J is also a pre-game snack ritual for some of the country's most renowned, professional athletes. The trend began during the 2007-2008 season when Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett along with a fellow teammate decided to have a PB&J before their game that evening. Garnett performed exceptionally well during that game and at that moment decided to make it a tradition for the team. Many of his teammates decided to take part in the pre-game ritual. The Celtics would go on to record a 66 win season along with an NBA championship. Since that season, the power of the PB&J has spread to NBA teams in all corners of the country and is now considered a pre-game tradition throughout the league.
